Over 25 years of experience with The Ketogenic Diet

My first exposure to the Ketogenic diet was when I was in graduate school and I picked up the first edition of “The Epilepsy Diet Treatment; an Introduction to The Ketogenic Diet” from the clearance table. I thought, “Wow, a diet that can treat epilepsy!” It sounded interesting and the book was only a dollar. Little did I know that this would become my career and that I would have the opportunity to contribute a chapter to later editions of that same book.

Over the past 25 years, I have been working with patients using the Ketogenic Diet as medical nutrition therapy . During that time, I have treated hundreds of patients from infancy through adulthood. Along the way, I created a more liberalized version of the classic Ketogenic Diet, the Low Glycemic Index Treatment, to allow those who found it difficult to comply with restrictiveness of the Ketogenic Diet to also obtain the positive outcomes.

I have written multiple book chapters in addition to the later edition of the book that started it all. My work has been published in peer reviewed journal articles. I am one of the contributing authors of the consensus statement providing optimal management guidelines for Ketogenic treatment.

Over the past decade, I have been part of the scientific advisory board of The Charlie Foundation. In 2016 I was awarded the first ever Millicent Kelly award for Excellence and Compassion in Administering Ketogenic Therapies at the fifth global symposium on Ketogenic Diet Therapies. My work has allowed me to give lectures nationally and internationally on all aspects of Ketogenic Dietary Treatment including management of dietary therapy and the use of Ketogenic Diet in the treatment of cancer.
